Special Processes

Through continuous improvement Redmayne have increased their capability by adding special processes throughout the business. All are either fully approved by Nadcap or our major customers.

NDT (NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING)

A group of analysis techniques used in the aerospace and marine industry to evaluate the properties of a material and components without causing damage. All aerospace components require one or more of these processes after manufacture. This process has helped us manage our lead times and costs to our customers.

MPI (MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION)

Sometimes referred to as MFD is a process for detecting surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferrous materials. The process puts a magnetic field into the part. The piece can be magnetized by direct or indirect magnetization. Specialised plant is required for this process.

DPI (DYE PENETRANT INSPECTION)

Sometimes referred to as PFD is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials.

HARDNESS AND CONDUCTIVITY TESTING

Is a test to determine the hardness of the material and to confirm that the material is to the correct specification. Normally results are given in BHN (Brinell Hardness Numbers) or Vickers. Conductivity is a measurement of the ability of the material to carry electrical current. Each material will have a defined amount of current flow, normally measured in siemens per metre.

AEI (ACID ETCH INSPECTION)

Is an inspection technique conducted to identify any transformation in the microstructure of the material caused by ineffectively controlled machining, grinding and heat treatment. AEI is considered to be one of the more important NDT test procedures as it can identify premature failures in service of components due to abuse.

MATERIAL MICROGRAIN TESTING

Due to the requirements of our customers we have the capability to metallurgical examine and pass samples from our Electron Beam Welder and from our Large capacity Thread Roller. All results and samples are stored on-site.

ELECTRON BEAM WELDING (EBW)

Is a fusion welding process in which a beam of high-velocity electrons is applied to the materials being joined. The work pieces melt as the kinetic energy of the electrons is transformed into heat upon impact and melts to form part of the weld. We use this process at present to produce close tolerance reservoir barrels in the aerospace industry.
